Montgomery College has an immediate need for a full-time, Access Services Specialist I position.  The work schedule is 40 hours per week within our operating hours, Monday – Saturday.  Hours for this position are, Tuesday – Thursday, 10:30a to 7:00pm and Friday and Saturday 8:30am to 5:00pm. This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 17 position. Location is at the Takoma Park, Silver Spring Campus. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College.  Montgomery College promotes and creates a working and learning environment rooted in the basic tenets of fairness, diversity, and inclusiveness.

Under supervision and direction, the incumbent is responsible for responding to information, access and technology requests.

Contacts include from students, faculty, staff and the general public, OIT, Facilities, Public Safety, and external regional libraries.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provides support to in-person and virtual users in finding materials and instruction on use of library catalog, discovery services and databases.
  • Triages information requests to appropriate library and College units and engages in nuanced queries to answer information requests using independent judgement and discretion.
  • Perform responsibilities in one or more of the following core functional areas: material reserves, fines & fees, interlibrary loans, inter campus loans, periodicals maintenance, stacks maintenance and displays & events, emergency preparedness.  Cross trains in these areas in order to provide necessary coverage.
  • Delivers directional assistance and information to orient users to the physical space of the library as well as online assistance with the use of library resources and online services.
  • Creates and maintains displays to increase awareness of resources and services along with recognition of various holidays, topics, and heritage months that may be of interest to Montgomery College staff, faculty, students, and members of the community as well as introduce patrons to library resources and the library’s role as a facilitator of information access. 
  • Assists with and troubleshoots technology issues in the library including but not limited to issues with computers, laptops, tablets, assistive technology, printers, digital scanners.
  • Assists users with computer session management.
  • Responsible for maintaining data related to circulation and information services transactions, including tracking statistics.   
  • Provides front line support on the library service desk. Delivers exceptional customer service and resolves conflicts that arise regarding library accounts and use of the physical space. 
  • Ensures that the day-to-day operations of the library are maintained by ensuring that facilities open, close, and secures building on time.
  • Reports to the campus access services supervisor any issues regarding Facilities and Public Safety and assumes responsibility for operations, facilities and safety of the library during early morning, evening and weekends in the absence of the access services specialist II or the campus access services supervisor. 
  • Interprets and implements College Policy and Procedure to ensure appropriate patron use of services, including maintaining patron confidentiality in compliance with FERPA, maintaining appropriate use of resources in compliance with U.S. Copyright Law, and maintaining appropriate use of technology in the library in compliance with the College’s Acceptable Use of Information Technology.  
  • Checks materials in/out to patrons using the library’s integrated management system, updates and maintains patron database, and follows-up on overdue materials. 
  • Responsible for annual testing of the library integrated management system software upgrades, in collaboration with the Lead Library Systems Analyst. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of modern office procedures and practices as applied to the operations of college libraries, library fundamentals and a library management system.
  • Effective skill in using personal computers and MS Office software applications.  
  • Effective verbal and written communications.  
  • Effective customer service and listening skills.
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and patience when working with others.
  • Effective multi-tasking and time management skills.  
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to install, test, evaluate, and troubleshoot hardware/software and devices.


 

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree.
  • One year of experience working in a library, or two years of administrative support or customer service experience. The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software applications and skills in using PC’s
  • Basic knowledge of U.S copyright law and “fair use” guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population in a busy public service setting.
  • Ability to assess situations, exercise judgement, and interpret guidelines to mediate situations.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

The hiring range is $20.04 to $25.05 per hour.  Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.
