DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 500+ full-time salaried faculty members and 150+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 800+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are over 250 clinical faculties practicing at multiple sites and hospitals. Professional fee billings for the department exceed $50 million with collections of over $19 million per year. The total annual budget is approximately $170 million, which includes contract and grant revenues, clinical practice and medical center funds, and other state and private endowment funds.

This is a research lab whose primary focus/aim is lung cancer and obesity. The lab uses immunologic, biochemical, cellular, and genetic approaches to address these questions.

Under supervision, incumbent will perform laboratory bench experiments pertaining to the molecular and genetic basis for lung cancer, utilizing molecular and cell biology techniques (which may include, but not limited to immunoblots, real-time quantitative PCR (q-PCR), flow cytometry, cell culture, animal cell transfection, RNAi knockdowns, etc... The incumbent will also oversee mouse strain development, colony management, genotyping and administrative concerns of the unique barrier-housed and genetically modified strains that require advanced breeding skills and specialized care. Expertise in dosing, immunizations, operation and trouble shooting of PCR and FACS machines are required. In addition, fluency in IACUC protocol writing, and compliance is required. The incumbent will assist with maintaining laboratory safety programs and environmental health and safety activities, including chemical waste and biological waste disposal. The incumbent will help maintain inventory of laboratory reagents and be responsible for ordering chemicals and reagents. Other duties could be assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge of a life science as is typically required by a Bachelor's Degree in a field related of research such as biology, molecular biology, immunology, and biochemistry.

  • Demonstrated RT-PCR and ELISA experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working with cell culture and transduction including siRNA and DNA.

  • Demonstrated experience in immunoblotting.

  • Excellent computer skills and ability to learn new computer programs. Demonstrated knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook. Ability to perform data entry.

  • Demonstrated experience in enzymatic kinetic assays.

  • Demonstrated experience performing standard laboratory techniques (pipetting, weighing). Ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Ability to follow experimental protocols.

  • Good organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.

  • Effective interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of personnel from different laboratories.

  • Skill in accurate record keeping paying close attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as to effectively document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

  • Ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

  • Willingness to learn new techniques and tasks and share knowledge of such.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with breeding and genotyping mice and handling the related documentation.

  • Past administrative experience as a lab manager.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,301 - $97,008 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $46.46

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
