Scope of Job
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as a Professor of Mexican American Studies (www.utrgv.edu/mas) beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year.
The successful applicant will contribute to Mexican American Studies through research, teaching, community engagement and service. The area of expertise within the field of Chicanx/Latinx Studies is open. Some possible areas of specialization include but are not limited to; Critical Latinx Indiigeneities, AfroLatinidad, migration studies, queer studies, visual studies, critical race studies, digital humanities, media studies, public policy and more The successful applicant will have a track-record of high-quality research and scholarship, as well as have demonstrated teaching excellence, commitment to student success, experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and a strong track record of leadership and service to the department, institution, and profession as well as cultivating community engagement opportunities and social justice. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the growth and strengthening of Mexican American Studies, mentoring of junior faculty, and assist in leadership roles within Mexican American Studies.

Department Background
Mexican American Studies was founded in 1970 by students as a major in UTRGV’s legacy institution, Pan American College/University of Texas Pan American. Today, Mexican American Studies serves a majority Mexican American student population on the U.S. Mexico border and houses a major, minor, graduate certificate, and master’s as a program in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Community Engagement in the College of Liberal Arts. The Mexican American Studies Program is a social justice-oriented program that prepares students to work, serve and research in their communities to address and navigate the complex socio-political/historical conditions surrounding Mexican American/Chicanx/Latinx communities. MAS prepares students to be leaders and advocates in their communities and professions and to promote a just society through a variety of careers.

Minimum Qualifications
PhD or other terminal degree (EdD, MFA,) in the field of Chicanx/a/o Studies, Mexican American Studies, Latinx/a/o Studies, American Studies, or other discipline in which the candidate’s area of specialization is Chicanx/Latinx Studies. The candidate must also meet the department and institutional requirements for tenure and be eligible for the rank of full Professor in Mexican American Studies to be considered for the position.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications
The area of specialization is open, but the candidate must have earned a minimum of 18 hours of graduate coursework in Chicanx/a/o Studiesand/or Latinx/a/o Studies

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to contribute to UTRGV’s mission of becoming a bicultural, bilingual and biliterate university. Experience in obtaining external funding. Experience in program leadership and development. Demonstrated commitment to community engagement, student success and the mentoring of students.

Additional Information
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
