Primary Purpose
Develop, coordinate, and evaluate activities and programs that enhance the quality of student life, with specific support for campus-wide program initiatives to prospective and current LGBTQ+ students. The position works in collaboration with other areas providing guidance and to assist students with issues which affect college success, including housing, admission and placement, financial aid, advising, retention, liaison with campus community, and serve as the lead for Safe Zone trainings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership:
    • Provide leadership including training, resource and content development, and identifying and training other facilitators for Safe Zone, Gender Identity, and other employee workshops related to LGBTQ+ education and issues.
    • Assist with the collection of data, evaluation of effectiveness of programs and services and preparation of reports and surveys concerning LGBTQ+ populations. Assist with performing ongoing assessments to ensure that program goals and objectives are met.
    • Participate in advisory committees and facilitate trainings, workshops, or events as assigned.
    • Provide leadership and coordinate for the LGBTQ+ Student Summer Symposium. This includes, but it not limited to program curriculum, logistics, hiring, training, and events. Requires that individuals stay on campus for the duration of the program, coordinating after-hours activities for Symposium students.

 


Program Support and Development:
  • Coordinate COCC’s LGBTQ+ student programs, including its college student programs and college prep summer symposium.
  • Design, coordinate, and present student focused programs, seminars, workshops, and events focused on education, personal skill development, and goal attainment for students.
  • Connect, collaborate, and establish partnerships with College departments and community organizations to maximize services and to strengthen outreach efforts. Increase the understanding of needs, experiences, and culture of LGBTQ+ students.
  • Monitor LGBTQ+ program expenses and assist in the development and writing of grant proposals for additional program funds.

Student Services:
  • Advise, mentor, and advocate for prospective and current LGBTQ+ students from across the service district about admissions, academics, financial aid, personal and other pertinent issues.
  • Serve as an advisor to campus groups or student clubs.
  • Develop and implement recruitment and retention programs for LGBTQ+ students, including activities and events focused on enrollment, academic success, personal skill development and goal attainment.

Administrative Duties:
  • Perform other essential functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.   • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of cultural issues on a college campus especially those impacting LGBTQ+ students.
  • Knowledge of developing and implementing social and educational programs and activities.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines, set work priorities, and manage workload.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to manage conflicts within and/or between groups. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to monitor budgets and other administrative processes in a timely and professional manner.
  • Ability to interpret College enrollment policies and explain rationale behind policies for prospective and current students, ensuring their understanding of expectations and requirements.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.

Ergonomic Requirements
Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Requirements
Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree.

 

Experience:
  • Two (2) years’ related professional experience working with diverse populations or communities with an emphasis on diversity, equity, social justice or inclusion, support, advocacy, and program services.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
    • Master’s degree in a related professional field.

 

Experience:
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working within and supporting LGBTQ+ communities
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English.
