Paul D. Camp Community College is a small 2-year college in Southeast Virginia. Campuses are located in Franklin and Suffolk. There also is a center in Smithfield. The college offers associate degrees, certificates, and career studies certificates In transfer and career/technical programs; credit and non-credit workforce services and training for businesses and industries; special interest classes for the community; and summer classes for youth through the Regional Workforce Development Center. A dual enrollment program for high school students, online courses, and developmental studies classes are available at the college as well.

EMS faculty must provide instruction, support, advice, assessment, and mentorship to Camp Community College’s students. Faculty are required to participate in the mission and community of the college entirely. The primary emphasis shall be on teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and through distance learning. Faculty will also perform related activities to help the students develop their interests and abilities to the fullest capacity to successful program completion, certification, and employment in the field of EMS.

As the program director, this position is responsible for:
  • Organizing, supervising, and administering all aspects of the program
  • Overseeing evaluation, continuous quality improvement, and growth of the program
  • Providing academic oversight including curriculum planning and development
  • Providing orientation, training, and supervision of clinical and capstone field internship preceptors
  • Partnering with other program faculty and staff
  • Monitoring program effectiveness, including proper assessment, measurement, and evaluation
  • Establishing cooperative involvement across the local medical community
  • Maintaining regular and consistent contact with students, faculty, and program personnel
  • Maintaining adequate control to ensure quality of delegated responsibilities
  • Establishing and maintaining Committee on Accreditation for the EMS Professions (CoAEMSP) program requirements for CAAHEP accreditation
  • Coordinating students’ supervised capstone internships
  • Preparing students to complete the national certification exam administered by the National Registry of EMTs
  • Maintaining membership of the EMS Curriculum Advisory Committee and convening regular meetings of this body
  • Maintaining own personal professional licensure, certification, and appropriate credentials as required by governing bodies.

Additional responsibilities include advising, supporting students, service to the college (including committee work/governance), and participation in community organizations and activities; and participation in scholarly and professional activities.

Teaching Load:
Camp Community College seeks faculty to teach a minimum of 15 credit hours/20 contact hours of lecture and laboratory each semester and other instructional loads as assigned, which may include classes at the Suffolk, Franklin, or Smithfield locations and online classes. These classes may be offered during the day, evening, and weekend classes. Contribute high energy, engagement, creativity, and leadership to the teaching and learning environment.

Professional Activities and Contributions:
Design, develop, and assess curriculum. Provide data to the accrediting bodies for EMS. Announce course offerings to the state and national bodies as appropriate. Collect, analyze, and write reports to the accrediting bodies. Serve as a faculty mentor for students and contribute to college governance and service. Collaborate in a diverse and collegial organizational culture with high standards for performance. Remain current in the academic discipline and in trends in teaching through professional development, further education, and or scholarship.

Engagement Hours
To promote the availability of faculty to work with individual students, all full-time faculty members are required to maintain (10) hours per week when they will be available to work with students outside of class meetings. The faculty are expected to be available to work with students on their individual academic and occupational concerns.

Additional Activities
Additional activities include committee work, student and community activities, student advising, and professional activities: e.g., discipline-specific initiatives and program and general education assessment.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Emergency Medical Services or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Current certification as a Virginia EMS Education Coordinator
  • No citations, suspensions or revocations issued by the Office of Emergency Medical Services of Virginia or National Registry (Past 5 years)
  • Two years of related, full-time occupational experience or equivalent.
  • Current National Registry certification at Paramedic level or Virginia certification at Paramedic Level.
  • Knowledge about the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Standards, and about evidenced-informed clinical practice
  • Can demonstrate a passion for the discipline of Emergency Medical Services and a commitment/belief that a diverse group of students from various backgrounds and ages, including adult learners, can learn this discipline, thus fulfilling the College’s mission to provide accessible, quality higher education, workforce training, and community development in our service region, while supporting success for a diverse student population, and fulfilling the needs of our employers.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills appropriate for students, colleagues, staff, and administrator interactions as an individual or as a part of a team.
  • Willingness to adopt an organized plan of instruction and use methods to fairly measure student progress toward student learning outcomes.
  • Must be able to work at Suffolk, Franklin, and Smithfield locations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Services or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Previous instructional experience in a CoAEMSP accredited EMS program.
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Documented track record of innovation in the classroom, teaching, soft skills
  • Program management experience

Additional Considerations:
  • Teaching experience with online, hybrid, and/or traditional face-to-face classroom modalities in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience in using instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) with the ability to use technology to enhance teaching and educational experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to measure, assess and align student outcomes within courses or programs.
