The Department of Surgery is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine and is comprised of 102 full time faculty members, 220 voluntary faculty members, 20 physicians employed on MSP agreements, 25 doctors employed by the VA or other facilities, 77 accredited and 13 non-accredited trainees and 100 career staff. Activities are organized in 13 sub-specialty divisions. Annual expenditures across the Department total over $66.5M with a global research portfolio of over $19M. Under supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), incumbent assists in research in an NIH-funded Cardiothoracic Surgery Research Laboratory. Duties include, but are not limited to, performing a variety of basic laboratory procedures,, involving mouse developmental biology, genotyping by PCR, animal care, animal testing, and performing surgical procedures in small species; collecting tissue samples; processing tissue samples for immunohistochemical analyses; cell culture; confocal microscopy; tissue culturing; protein analysis, Western Blotting, Northern Blotting; RNA analysis; and DNA Analysis. The applicant must be fluent in diverse operative systems, including Microsoft Windows and MAC OS. Adobe skills re required, including Photoshop, Acrobat, Fireworks, and Illustrator, as well as mastering of Word, Power Point, and Excel. Professional data management and previous experience using EPIC and Slicer Dicer are required. Writing skills are mandatory for assisting with Grant and scientific paper development, as well as previous experience making figures and using data analysis software such as R. Laboratory maintenance duties include tracking an maintaining appropriate laboratory inventory, ordering supplies, tracking and maintaining appropriate certifications and laboratory employees, preparing and submitting research proposals, serving as liaison between regulatory entities and the PI, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSTheoretical knowledge in Biology, Life Science generally acquired by a Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and experience.
Proficiency in using database software including Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel, and Power Point).
Experience performing research duties in a research environment. Experience with following a research protocol in order to carry-out study procedures and collect data.
Ability to work with research team including preparing and responding to data queries. Proven ability to work with minimal direction and work collaboratively with the research team and investigators.
Excellent planning and organizational skills and ability to work in a changing, multiple-demand setting in order to prioritize a large volume of work and meet deadlines efficiently and accurately.
Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communications skills to communicate clearly, effectively, tactfully, sensitively, and patiently in-person, on the phone and in writing to a diverse population; including participants, faculty, and staff, including the ability to administer face-to-face and telephone interviews and keep accurate and detailed records.
Excellent writing, editing, spelling and proofreading skills including knowledge of proper formats, grammar, structure and content.
Working knowledge of MS Office: including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and IE.
Experience with Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Fireworks.
Working with video editing software.
Previous EPIC and Slicer Dicer working experience.
Understand medical terms and conditions, as well as human physiology.
Work effectively and productively as part of a research team.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
