Essential Job Duties

The Unocic Research Group in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to conduct fundamental and applied research in the area of advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy, in situ/operando STEM, and Cryo STEM of nano and energy materials.

About AIF: The Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) is NC State’s premier shared research facility for materials characterization. The facility is equipped with modern, advanced materials characterization instrumentation and experienced research staff.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy research with the probe corrected Thermo Fisher Scientific Titan S/TEM, Thermo Fisher Scientific Talos S/TEM, and Thermo Fisher Scientific Spectra Ultra STEM (coming in summer 2025) in the Analytical Instrumentation Facility at North Carolina State University
  • Advance microscopy research with aberration corrected STEM, 4D-STEM, in situ/operando STEM, and analytical STEM-EELS-EDS
  • Develop novel methods for in situ/operando STEM experimentation
  • Implement Machine Learning workflows within in situ STEM experiments


Work Schedule

Standard 8am-5pm but may be flexible based on instrument availability

Department Required Skills

  • A PhD in materials science and engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related
    discipline completed within the last five years
  • A strong background in aberration corrected STEM and in situ microscopy
  • Experience with Python for data analysis and machine learning
  • Experience with FIB preparation, mechanical polishing, and ion milling
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by
    publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in
    English to an international scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to collaboratively
    with teams of researchers

1-5 years of relevant research experience post-PhD
