Job Summary

The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment. Through our partnerships across the university and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, we use a blended service model to meet the needs of our community and exceed expectations.

Our UM-Dearborn Department of Public Safety seeks to fill two Police Officer positions, who will report to a Police Sergeant. UM-Dearborn DPS is now responsible for the safety and security of Marygrove College, and assignments may include this site.

Responsibilities*

You Will:

  • Uphold the highest standards of conduct and customer service while serving and protecting our community and taking measures to prevent crime
  • Enforce University ordinances and regulations and State and Federal laws
  • Patrol campus areas for crime prevention, parking, and traffic control and issue citations
  • Policing response on and adjacent to campus
  • Obtain and serve warrants, subpoenas, and other court documents
  • Identify, apprehend, and arrest suspects
  • Testify in criminal, civil, and administrative hearings
  • Community-oriented policing problem-solving

Required Qualifications*

  • You must pass a background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination
  • High school or GED equivalent + 2 years of relevant police/military experience, completion of an accredited police training academy or training + MCOLES license and certification (or certifiable) OR Associate degree; completion of an accredited police training academy or training + MCOLES license and certification (or certifiable)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proven customer service and teamwork ability

Additional Information

All members of the DPSS team are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report any Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
