Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The UMD Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee recognizes that the development of knowledge necessary for the improvement of the health and well-being of humans as well as other animals requires in vivo experimentation with a wide variety of animal species. The UMD IACUC ensures that animal activities comply with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research, and/or 9 Code of Federal Regulations Chapter 1, 2.31 (as applicable), and advocates for the use of alternatives as described by the 3 Rs: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement (Russell & Burch, 1959, Principles of Humane Experimental Technique). The University of Maryland at College Park Animal Care Program is accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC), and seeks to maintain the highest standards of animal care and use, in support of the highest quality research outcomes.
Under the supervision of the Director of Animal Research Compliance, the Research Compliance Specialist (RCS) will provide specialized programmatic support of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the IACUC Office in accordance with institutional and committee policies and agreements, federal and state laws and regulations, accreditation standards, and applicable guidance references. The primary roles of the RCS include: information gathering, data management, and data analytics related to maintaining the UMD AAALAC accreditation; data management, compilation, and analytics of the semi-annual program review and facilities inspection findings and reporting process; timely and accurate provision of information/data reporting to the IACUC and the Vice President for Research; overhaul and upkeep of the UMD IACUC website; development and deployment of communications tools and processes, to include the use of text/infographic, photographic, and/or video modalities; and provision of technology and communications support for the current online protocol submission system.
The RCS will also play a central role in the construction and deployment of a new online protocol submission system, to be implemented over the next two years. This process will involve working with external partners on protocol format and workflow development, data migration, and education tools and trainings during the transition process, as well providing ongoing information, updates, and support for investigators as they utilize the system once implemented. Along with all members of the office, the RCS will provide support for protocol and amendment submission and processing and other duties as assigned.

Experience:
Minimum of 4 years of experience in professional marketing and/or communications, to include experience with communications and client relations, in written, infographic, web-based, and/or video modalities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of and experience with regulatory/compliance processes and the management of information/data associated with federal compliance requirements.
- High proficiency in relevant office software and systems (e.g., MS Office, Google, Box, and online protocol submission systems) and an adaptive mindset to the use of technology in the workplace.
- High degree of attention to detail, with excellent organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong customer service skills and mindset.
- Team player with a positive attitude, who can develop and maintain constructive and collaborative working relationships with others.
Preferences:
Preferences:
- Masters degree in Information Science, Communications, or Marketing.
- Knowledge of and experience with the regulations and management of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and animal research.
- Knowledge of and experience with IACUC protocol submission, semi-annual inspections, AAALAC accreditation, and/or committee management.
- Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA) or the ability to obtain CPIA within 3 years of hire.

- Target Salary Range $68,026 – $85,033.
