DESCRIPTION

The Human Embryonic Stem Cell Core Facility (HESCCF) is a medium-sized laboratory providing services to an increasing number of research users who pay recharge costs to the facility. The current number of frequent users is 30. Created in 2005, the HESCCF is a cornerstone of the UCSD institutional commitment to leadership in Regenerative Medicine. It fosters and promotes HESC research at UCSD and partner institutes of the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine. The facility 1) trains scientists in the basic methods to conduct HESC research, 2) facilitates HESC research for many investigators, both established and beginning scientists, 3) provides a 'safe haven' that is sheltered from any federal funding source thus allowing unimpeded HESC research, and 4) provides state-of-the-at technologies necessary to advance stem cell research. The facility sustains ongoing research projects and allows the proposal of new projects necessitating such facilities.

Under general supervision, the Stem Cell Research Associate undertakes research projects in collaboration with academic supervisors, making innovative contributions. The incumbent will operate and maintain two Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorters (FACS) and two bench top flow cytometers. Independently performs standard and advanced laboratory procedures with Human Embryonic Stem Cells. Performs cell culture laboratory procedures. Maintains and expand new hES cell lines for Core users. Evaluates new reagents and protocols and prepares detailed analysis of results. Conducts advanced experiments such as qPCR, fluorescent and confocal microscopy, gel imaging, and proliferation assays. Performs protocol troubleshooting to help researchers overcome scientific bottlenecks. Attends technical seminars to learn how to integrate emerging technologies into the Core. Performs other duties as assigned.
