Position description

The Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences is committed to academic, scientific, and clinical excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The Vice Chancellor invites applications for outstanding faculty (internal) who provide important contributions to the Health Sciences through dedicated faculty and student mentorship, broad University service, and sustained extramural funding. This position is open to any UCSD faculty member with a primary appointment in Health Sciences who is not currently in the ladder-rank series.

Through this recruitment, we seek to identify a cohort of Health Sciences faculty who have a demonstrated strong commitment to mentorship, particularly to trainees from groups in medicine and/or biomedical research; excellence in research, teaching, and University service such that the nominee meets the criteria for a Senate ladder-rank position; and a track record of accomplishment in sustaining a strong research program.

UC San Diego Health Sciences is one of three academic units at UC San Diego. Health Sciences includes three professional schools (medicine, pharmacy, and public health); more than 30 research institutes; and a growing clinical practice that includes two hospitals, all working toward fulfilling the Health Sciences' tripartite mission. Led by the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, it accounts for the majority of the University's research and philanthropic portfolios and serves as the top healthcare system in the San Diego region. Health Sciences has more than 1,800 faculty members, 900 residents and fellows, 800 medicine and pharmacy students, 1,500 graduate students, and 1,000 undergraduate public health majors. Its academic programs rank among the best in the country for primary care and research.

UC San Diego and UC San Diego Health Sciences aim to enhance our academic and research missions and establish inclusive environments to help new hires succeed. Candidates will present any previous experience having served as a role model in mentoring others. In addition to the highest standards of scholarship, teaching, and professional activity, successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to promoting inclusive excellence and help shape and expand the University's diversity initiatives (http://diversity.ucsd.edu/).

The selected candidates will demonstrate a commitment to mentorship, particularly to trainees from groups in medicine and/or biomedical research. The selected candidates will also have a high level of integrity and professionalism, and a commitment to support the professional development of faculty and staff.

The selected candidate(s) will receive a ladder-rank appointment with the potential for some discretionary funding. Candidates must have a primary appointment in Health Sciences and hold no ladder-rank appointment. The selected candidates if applicable, will have no more than 5/8ths VA appointment at the time of selection. (Faculty with current VA Merit Awards may receive an exception for the duration of the grant period.)

The appointment will be at Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level and the series will include 50% Ladder Rank / 50% In-Residence.
