Job Description

Sterling College, an environmentally focused liberal arts institution located in Craftsbury Common, Vermont, is seeking an Admission Counselor to join our dedicated team. The Admission Counselor will serve as a vital link between the college and prospective students, school counselors, families, and other external constituents. This role is instrumental in enrolling students who align with the values and academic goals of Sterling College. This is a full-time, on-site position starting September 2024, that requires a deep commitment to fostering environmental stewardship through higher education.

Position Responsibilities

  • Serve as an ambassador for Sterling College to diverse external groups, including prospective students and their families, school counselors, community-based organization counselors, and independent education consultants.

  • Travel to represent the college at national, regional, and local events and high schools primarily during the Fall and Spring recruitment seasons.

  • Engage with prospective students and other stakeholders individually or in small groups in professional and informative ways.

  • Maintain active and meaningful communication with prospective students through electronic platforms, telephone, and in-person visits.

    • Provide guidance to prospective students and their families on the admission and financial aid processes.

    • Facilitate campus tours and group presentations.

    • Cultivate relationships in areas aligned with Sterling's environmental focus.

  • Evaluate admission files and make recommendations.

  • Timely, clear, and accurate documentation of engagements, interactions, and status.

  • Knowledge about Sterling's academic offerings, financial aid options, and policies.

  • Participate in planning and executing recruitment strategies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Admission.

  • On-site presence for community events, such as academic presentations, student arrival days, and annual celebrations.

  • Attend directed professional development activities.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Exceptional interpersonal, public speaking, and writing skills.

    • Comfortable interacting with high school and early college-aged students and non-traditional students, school professionals, and other constituents.

    • Strong presentations skills.

  • Teamwork orientation and ability to work independently.

  • Proficiency in computer software and database management.

  • Knowledge of social media platforms.

  • Travel for 8-10 weeks per year, including driving to scheduled visits.

  • Able to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Demonstrated passion for environmental stewardship and higher education.

  • Experience in admissions, recruitment, or related fields is preferred.

Reporting Relationship

The Admission Counselor reports to the Director of Admission.

Work Arrangement

This is a full-time, exempt, at-will, office-based position requiring frequent travel, primarily in the fall and spring seasons, to represent Sterling College at various events. In addition to travel, this position occasionally requires work on nights and weekends. 

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Periods sitting in a car, airplane, other means of transport, or in an office or other style chair.

  • Daily use of keyboard, computer, mouse, and other office equipment.

  • Vehicle driving for extended periods and in various weather conditions.

  • Lifting and moving items weighing up to 45 pounds - in and out of a vehicle, and into and out of work areas.

  • Moving items, both indoor and outdoor, over surfaces that are potentially uneven or otherwise impacted by local weather conditions.

  • Ability to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time such as during a college fair.

Salary & Benefits

Salary range of $44,000-$46,000
