Chief Operating Office (COO)
The mission of Indigenized Energy is to pursue tribal energy sovereignty through trusting partnerships and innovative programs that grow our collective capacity to unleash the power of renewable energy. Indigenized Energy, fiscally sponsored by Mission Edge San Diego, is a pioneering non-profit organization dedicated to empowering tribal communities through sustainable and renewable energy initiatives. Our work, rooted in the principles of energy sovereignty and environmental stewardship, has been recognized and supported by prominent foundations such as the MacArthur Foundation, Energy Foundation, and Builders Initiative.
Job Summary
The COO is pivotal in advancing Indigenized Energy's mission by orchestrating operational excellence, driving strategic growth, and ensuring the effective implementation of our sustainable energy initiatives in tribal communities. This role is dedicated to scaling our impact, fostering partnerships, and building organizational capacity to empower Indigenous peoples through energy sovereignty and environmental stewardship.
Areas of Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Organizational Management (25%)
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop and implement Indigenized Energy's strategic plan
- Oversee all operational aspects of the organization, including program delivery, finance, human resources, and technology
- Lead the development and implementation of operational policies, systems, and processes
- Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and cultural sensitivity
- Represent Indigenized Energy to external stakeholders, including tribal leaders, funders, and partners
Program Development and Impact Measurement (25%)
- Guide the development and scaling of sustainable energy programs for tribal communities
- Establish and maintain robust impact measurement systems
- Oversee the creation of impact reports and presentations for stakeholders
- Identify opportunities for program expansion and new initiatives
Financial Management and Sustainability (20%)
- Work with the finance team to develop and manage the organization's budget
- Ensure financial sustainability through effective resource allocation and cost management
- Collaborate on diversifying funding sources and increasing unrestricted funding
- Oversee grant management processes, ensuring compliance and timely reporting
Partnerships and Stakeholder Management (15%)
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with tribal leaders, energy sector partners, and key stakeholders
- Represent Indigenized Energy at high-level meetings, conferences, and events
- Negotiate and manage strategic partnershipsEnsure culturally sensitive and respectful engagement with tribal communities
Team Leadership and Development (15%)
- Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team aligned with our mission and values
- Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for staff members
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and empowering work environment
- Ensure clear communication and alignment across all departments and programs
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Engineering, or a related field is desired, but not required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- At least 10 years of experience with 5 years in a senior operational role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of creative operational management strategies
- Proven experience in an operational leadership role, preferably within a startup or non-profit organization
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills
- Enthusiastic team player who understands the dynamic of working in a matrixed organization
- Outgoing with ability to provide excellent customer service to staff and external partners
- Excellent critical thinker and problem solver; able to make solid judgments and decisions

Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this poisition is $135,000-$150,000 per year and is negotiable based on qualifications and experience. We have a comprehensive and competitive benefits package for full time employees including health insurance and paid time off.

This position will require working remotely, in the field and from your home (or other suitable place). Reliable transportation and dependable internet service at your home (or place of working) is required.
