Essential Job Duties

The Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) at NC State University is seeking an experienced, digitally-focused communicator to help shape and enhance the public-facing brand of the institute.

We’re looking for someone who is:

IEI’s Communications and Marketing leads the brand management of IEI, engaging in effective communications and marketing strategies to increase visibility and raise awareness of our impact across North Carolina through strategic engagement with stakeholders, fostering understanding of IEI’s programs and initiatives, and executing complex campaigns across multiple communications channels.

The digital communications specialist (DCS) is a key member of IEI’s Communications and Marketing team. Reporting directly to the director of communications, the DCS is a dynamic, collaborative and intuitive communications professional whose training, knowledge, insights and skills are current with the field of digital communications and content marketing.

The DCS will be responsible for the development and implementation of comprehensive digital communications and content marketing strategies to strengthen the institute’s brand. Day-to-day tasks include creating digital content, managing IEI’s website, collaborating with the director of communications on advertising campaigns surrounding the Emerging Issues Forum and other large-scale events, enhancing IEI’s engagement on social media and managing the institute’s email marketing efforts, as well as identifying other opportunities for growing IEI’s audience.

To be successful in this role, the DCS will be well versed in creating clear, concise content for the web and social media. The DCS will have experience with tools such as Google Analytics and Hootsuite to determine the success of content and identify areas for improvement. The DCS should have some experience in using graphic design software such as Canva and the Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop) as well as an understanding of the evolving best practices for developing multimedia content for digital platforms. Basic videography and/or photography editing skills are essential to this role.

The DCS will also work with the director of communications to develop feature and community stories, press releases, speeches, presentations, publications, reports and other materials with minimal supervision and often under tight deadlines.

Other Responsibilities

  • Community storytelling. Identify and develop community stories highlighting local work influenced by the institute.
  • Photograph internal events as needed.
  • Provide support for virtual events as needed.
  • Perform various duties as needed to fulfill the function of the position successfully.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Google applications and Google Analytics
  • Proficiency in web conferencing platforms such as Zoom
  • Proficiency in social media management platforms such as Hootsuite
  • Proficiency in website content management software such as WordPress, as well as search engine optimization (SEO) best practices.
  • Experience in design software including Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and more) and Canva
  • Proficiency in email marketing software such as MailChimp
  • Superior written/verbal communication skills, copyediting skills, strong interviewing and research skills
  • Knowledge of AP Style; ability to write successfully in many other styles across multiple platforms (print, web, social media, various collateral material, etc.)
  • Strong project management abilities including the capacity to work independently and within a team environment, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others, both internally and externally
  • General photography, videography, and/or video editing experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience working in the field of communications
  • Experience within the higher ed, government, public policy and/or non-profit sectors is strongly desired
  • Interest in public policy and/or civic engagement is beneficial
  • Experience managing paid advertising campaigns
  • Experience interviewing stakeholders

Required License or Certification

This position requires the incumbent to travel to complete the core functions of the role. A valid driver’s license is required and must be maintained as a condition of employment or alternative modes of reliable transportation.
