Position Summary:
The Part time Student Success Coach provides academic support services to students apart of the WCC-Parkridge Community Center Youth Programming. This coach will assist with academic success, retention and completion. This position promotes a positive learning experience for all students with a focus on growth mindset, intrusive coaching, and holistic student development. This position will establish relationships and work on academic support plans for attainment of short and long-term academic goals. Assess service needs regularly to assist and support efforts toward identifying academic goals, needs, and developing an individualized academic plan for each student. This position is responsible for the effective coordination of service and support with school counselors, teachers, and student family members to create an intentional plan. This position is granted funded.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Successfully partner and collaborate with local school districts (i.e. Ypsilanti Community Schools) to support their students through the offering of innovative and intentional programming through the Department of College and Career Readiness.
  • Conduct individual, group and family coaching sessions to discuss academic resources and opportunities.
  • Monitoring and tracking student success indicators such as progress reports, report cards, attendance, behavior and identifying appropriate interventions and resources along with regular check-ins
  • Participate in the design and implementation of student success programs, positive intervention methods and other unique strategies to maximize student success, such as, out of school learning programs, academic success and family advocacy workshops, and creating services to better meet the needs of Parkridge participants.
  • Serve as a key member of a Success Team for Parkridge Community Center students and families, collaborate with designated counselors, advisors, teachers, WCC staff and other partners to provide appropriate resources and referrals, to develop enhanced academic programs.
  • Act as a liaison between local school districts, WCC College and Career Readiness department and Parkridge staff members.
  • Work one-on-one with students and parents to develop individualized success development plans; including goal setting, education/academic progression/advancement, career interest assessments and strategies in mitigating barriers to personal and academic success.
  • Meet frequently with students and track their academic progress and goal attainment
  • Document student and participant interactions in appropriate college systems in a timely manner.
  • Provide regular reports to Departmental Leadership concerning student success risks and intervention support; and effective solutions where appropriate.
  • Attend regularly scheduled and emergency staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager of College and Career Readiness or designee.

Hours/Schedule: This is a part time administrative position working approximately 20 hours per week.

  • Associates Degree or two or more years of college course work complete required in Education, Social Work, Human Services, or related field.
  • Three years of work experience related to student development, education, or academic support.
  • Dynamic presence, creativity, and the ability to connect the target audience are essential.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate with students individually and to present information in a group setting.
  • Understand the complexities in relation to non-traditional students.
  • Demonstrate and possess a strong understanding of cultural competency, and how to communicate effectively to different audiences.
  • Appreciation and sensitivity to the needs of students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
  • Critical thinking and interpersonal skills, ability to manage multiple tasks required.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Willingness to be innovative, take intellectual risks, and learn from mistakes.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Human Services or other related fields.
