About the Department

NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship is housed within the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs within the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, which provides leadership, direction and oversight for the programmatic planning and implementation of universitywide interdisciplinary programs and initiatives.

NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s role is to build a culture of entrepreneurship at NC State. Using an interdisciplinary approach, we foster and teach innovation and entrepreneurship by providing resources and real-world experiences for students across the university. These include but are not limited to:
  • The Garage, a co-working facility that provides resources for student start-ups
  • Academic courses that focus on entrepreneurial thinking
  • Co-curricular activities such as the VenturePack Challenge student start-up competition,
  • The Entrepreneurship Clinic that supports startup companies with student team projects,
  • Technology Commercialization programs that capitalize on the intellectual property developed at NC State,
  • Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship programs such as the Social Innovation Fellows that provide students with an immersive project experience
  • Alumni involvement and engagement activities
  • College and Department based entrepreneurship programs

Essential Job Duties

The Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship Director will lead a dynamic campus-wide competency-based program to engage and support University and community constituents. This position establishes a campus unit for thought leadership in the field of Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship, with specific emphasis on environmental sustainability. The Director will be a major force to teach and involve students, faculty and staff to prepare for successful careers and enhance NC State’s research to create more prosperous, equitable and sustainable communities. Our aim is to promote mission-driven students and faculty ideas into thriving organizations with measurable impact.

Situated in the university wide Innovation and Entrepreneurship program, the Director reports to the Executive Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The Director engages in two broad activities:

1) Education:
The Director leads efforts to establish a vibrant Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship program across campus. This includes creating and growing Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship courses and programs. Partnering with academic departments and other administrative units as well as faculty and student run centers and programs the Director will establish and grow university wide curriculum and co-curricular programs. It is expected that the program will reach a large portion of the NC State community.

2) Commercialization
The Director leads efforts to put NC State research to practical use, particularly in the area of sustainability with measurable impact. Of specific interest is the ability to partner with researchers and guide sustainability research into commercial use. A major strength at NC State University is our research in environmental sustainability in a host of categories such as marine, atmospheric, soil, water, coastal, waste and permanent chemicals among others. As such NC State is uniquely positioned to make a substantial impact on a wide range of environmental and climate issues. This provides an exceptional opportunity for the Director to make a lasting impact by working with many national, state, local entities, partner universities and granting agencies to initiate, build and grow programs in sustainability.

The Director will work with the Director of Technology Commercialization, the NC State Entrepreneurship Clinic, the Wolfpack Investor Network, the Office of Research Commercialization, the Chancellor’s Innovation Fund, the Daugherty Endowment, as well as numerous on campus and off campus venture creation and investment organizations to put NC State research to practical use.

Duties include:
  • Participate and contribute to the strategic planning and operations of the broader Innovation and Entrepreneurship program.
  • Research, design, develop and implement curricular and co-curricular opportunities for incubating and integrating social innovation and entrepreneurship at NC State
  • Setting annual program and project goals to further the social innovation and entrepreneurship strategy.
  • Work with and support other initiatives to foster social innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Identify and engage appropriate stakeholders on and off campus to promote social innovation and Entrepreneurship.
  • Work with technical faculty to prepare their research for broader impact in environmental sustainability.
  • Help researchers find funding for sustainability research.
  • Build relationships across campus between researchers to foster sustainability research and practical application.
  • Provide guidance, direction, advice, and assistance to university members seeking to commercialize sustainability research.
  • Establish and refine operational plans including policies, procedures, and budget.
  • Successfully guide and connect social entrepreneurs with the resources they need to succeed.
  • Develop and implement strategies in conjunction with our development and alumni association to support donor engagement.
  • Establish the metrics and methods to track, monitor and evaluate outcomes and impact of the Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program.
  • Participate in other Innovation and Entrepreneurship programs such as the Wolf Den, VenturePack Challenge, competitions, company visits, mentorship program and the LaunchPad incubator.
  • Serve as an expert to provide advice, feedback, guidance and advocacy for social innovation and entrepreneurial activities.
  • Initiate and participate in grant writing and research projects with other researchers.
  • Work with various faculty and curriculum committees to plan and implement Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship courses and degree programs.

The Director will also be responsible or the day-to-day operations of the Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship program:

  • Teach at least one course per semester in the area of Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship at either the graduate or undergraduate level.
  • Manage operations of the Social Innovation Fellows program including mentoring students, facilitating teams. Recruit and select applicants for the annual Social Innovation Fellows cohort.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate programming to help establish the appropriate allocation of funds.
  • Hold regular meetings with the Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship Advisory Board.
  • Host events and individuals associated with the Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
  • Research, development and implementation of programmatic content for Innovation Labs, workshops and educational offerings.

Other Duties:
  • Serve on the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Leadership Team.
  • Supervises Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship program temps and student workers.



Other Responsibilities

Provide support of Innovation and Entrepreneurship projects and programs as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Degree and/or experience in social and sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship, business and the nonprofit sector, or relevant field of studyA track record of successfully translating research into viable offerings in organizations.
  • A high degree of enthusiasm for Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
  • Significant professional experience with a proven track record along with an understanding and appreciation of business in the area of sustainability.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with diverse organizations in various sectors including private, non-profit, public, non-governmental, media and education.Ability to diplomatically build relationships across cultures and interest groups and work effectively with a wide range of people
  • Proven track record of leveraging resources to achieve program objectives with established resources.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree, PhD Preferred, in a relevant field of study. Although a technical degree is not required the ability to converse with and work with technical people to form business and operational plans is required.
  • 5-10 years work experience helping establish and build a Social and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship program.
  • Five years experience in an academic setting.
  • Ability to plan and teach graduate and undergraduate coursesDemonstrable knowledge and experience of the investment process.
  • Experience mentoring students and young organizations to promote their ideas and research into practical solutions.
