University Safety Advisor Team (USAT): The purpose of the University Safety Advisor Team is to prevent accidents and injuries by identifying, eliminating, and minimizing actual or potential hazards in labs and to ensure compliance with regulations and University standards. USAT conducts inspections to ensure lab personnel are remaining compliant with applicable training requirements, implementing appropriate engineering controls, administrative controls, and work practices, wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE), using and maintaining laboratory equipment in a safe operating condition, effectively managing hazardous chemicals and regulated unwanted materials; and understanding the appropriate procedures to follow during emergencies. USAT also performs inspections to collaborate with lab personnel to address lab-specific hazards and help provide a work environment that is free of recognizable hazards.
Radiation Safety Program:
Maintains compliance with regulations and conditions of licenses and device registrations for use of radioactive materials and radiation generating devices. Radiation Safety support extends to programming on campus proper, satellite locations and the PULSTAR Reactor. Radiation safety program activities include performing radioactive materials laboratory inspections, issuing and processing dosimetry, tracking radioactive material inventory, processing shipments and receipt of hazardous materials, developing campus outreach and educational materials and delivering training classes, and providing consultative services and other program activities associated with radiation safety.
Essential Job Duties
Primary responsibilities include:
Lab Inspections for Radiation Safety, USAT & Non-Ionizing Radiation Equipment Programs
- Conduct Radiation, USAT and Non-Ionizing radiation lab safety inspections (including for laser, magnets, radio-frequency (RF) power supplies), and issue reports and findings
- Act as Associate Laser Safety Officer (ALSO), assisting LSO in managing and implementing the laser safety program
- Identify, monitor, inspect, startup/shut down laboratories and use/storage/waste areas
- Utilize EHSA database to build out all programs and to continually update all records including radiation and laser safety records
Technical/Electronic Equipment Management
- Perform diagnostic Xray device output measurements in support of safety and QA audits
- Calibrate campus radiation meters (GM, ion chamber) using EHS calibrator facility
- Install, operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot electronic instrumentation for EHS including radiation analyzers (gamma spec, a/b counting, LSC), air sampling equipment, industrial hygiene equipment such as gas meters, sound level meter, IAQ calc, Portacount fit tester, air sampling equipment, etc.
EHS Programmatic Support
- Continuous development and support for Lab Safety Assessment documents, including lab safety plan implementation, outreach and compliance documentation, permit status updates
- Developing and providing training for PI and lab staff on different functions of EHS and our websites and functions
- Create and curate tracking metrics for all USAT inspections and any programmatic needs
- Manage Radiation Dosimetry Programs, in conjunction with RSO, to support licenses and registrations
- Assist with other EHS requirements or special projects

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Other Required Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of regulations associated with hazardous material management, radiation safety practices, and emergency planning, preparedness and response
- Considerable knowledge of research laboratory equipment including lasers, RF power supplies, radiation generating and xray equipment, and magnetic systems.
- Considerable knowledge of safety related diagnostic/QA equipment including industrial hygiene and environmental sampling equipment
- Considerable knowledge of database use and management to track performance outcomes.
- Experience with regulations and program management
- Demonstrates understanding and application of regulatory codes/directives to implement institutional practices and develop corrective actions
- Knowledge of a broad array of hazardous materials to perform program functions
- Articulate and succinct written and oral communication abilities
- Keen sense of organizational direction and awareness, to predict needs and make sound recommendations for solutions
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in in a Physical Science, Environmental
Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline with experience in an academic setting. - Considerable knowledge of database use and management to track performance outcomes.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- Valid driver’s license required
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of hire, must be maintained
- Maintain DOT/IATA certifications for hazardous material shipping and security (Radiation specific)
