About BASF
BASF is a nonprofit organization and the oldest voluntary bar association in California. Today, over 7,300 San Francisco lawyers are members of BASF, which prides itself as being one of the most active and innovative local bar associations. Our offices are located in the Financial District. In addition to services and benefits to our members, BASF provides a variety of legal services to San Francisco residents including our Lawyer Referral and Information Service, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and the Justice & Diversity Center (including the Homeless Advocacy Project) which is the largest provider of legal services to San Franciscans.
Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Deputy Executive Director (DED) will have both internal- and external-facing responsibilities within the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF) and the Justice & Diversity Center (JDC), including developing department strategies, helping to manage and oversee internal operations and member/volunteer recruitment/retention, oversee and manage various free legal services programs/projects.. The DED will oversee and work closely with various business unit managers and directors to ensure departmental achievement of goals, and will partner closely with the ED to plan the organization’s future growth and strategic response to an ever-changing legal profession and community needs.
Essential Job Functions:
- Operational focus for both organizations
- Oversee the department goal settings and objectives/outcomes
- Responsible for various BASF and JDC departments which may include: CIS/ADR, Membership, Barristers, Communications, CLE/Events, LRIS, HAP, Immigration, PBLS
- Lead the organization in achieving goals (including financial goals ) and objectives through effective leadership and oversight, team motivation and strategic planning and prudent financial management
- Operationalize ED’s vision in structuring and leading teams to deliver outstanding products and services
- Collaborate with Finance Department and department heads to assist in budget preparation, administration, results and action plan reviews
- Ensure department structures and goals are efficiently aligned with organizational goals; identify short- and long-term issues and implement solutions necessary to achieve and maintain goals
- Partner with the ED in identifying best practices and improving internal systems to meet the organization’s future needs and budgetary and human resources; evaluate departmental business practices and propose and implement changes where appropriate
- Oversee/assist ED in working with members, volunteers and staff on various organizational projects and engagement
- Mentor and coach staff; be a visible, approachable sounding board/resource and problem-solving partner
- Build and maintain strong client and community relationships
- Drive BASF member engagement and membership growth
- Participate in JDC fundraising, building grantor and other relationships including oversight and strategy
- Develop thought leadership around specific topics/emerging trends in organizational and business development
- Share in knowledge dissemination, reporting, and communications of the organizations’ programs, projects and initiatives
- Participate in organizations’ marketing strategies and analysis
- Attend and assist with facilitating BASF and JDC board and other meetings
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Juris Doctor Degree required and must be a California licensed attorney. A business degree or an equivalent combination of relevant business education, training, and expertise sufficient to perform the essential duties of the position are preferred.
- Seven years’ experience as an attorney and executive with strong operations, financial budgeting, demonstrated results and performance management responsibilities
- Experience working with a diverse population of lawyers or other highly-skilled professionals as association members, clients, volunteers and funders
- Experience in the legal, service-driven, customer-focused, or non-profit industries

- Ability to develop effective comprehensive strategic plans
- Ability to simultaneously manage multiple components of a project from beginning to end, including setting and meeting deadlines
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to multi-task in a high volume, fast-paced, service- and team-oriented environment and independently prioritize with high attention to detail Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook) and knowledge of technology trends and tools in the use of general database systems and social media
- Strong knowledge of operating metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Knowledge of marketing strategies and ability to analyze their effectiveness
