EMPLOYER: Simsbury A Better Chance (ABC) is a non-profit residential college preparatory program for young men of color who attend Simsbury High School. To learn more please visit our webiste.
POSITION TITLE: Resident Academic Advisor
REPORTS TO: Board President
LOCATION: 835 Hopmeadow Street in downtown Simsbury, CT.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
AGE REQUIREMENT: Will be at least 21 years of age
LANGUAGE: Must be fluent in English
General: The Resident Academic Advisor oversees, supports, and reports on the academic progress of each student. The Resident Academic Advisor and the Resident Directors are responsible for furnishing an affectionate, orderly, safe environment for each student. The students in the program are competitively selected from around the United States and are typically high-performing and well-behaved. There are usually 7-8 male students residing in the program.
Compensation and benefits: The non-monetary compensation includes a one-bedroom apartment with rent and year-round utilities (covering heat, electricity, and internet) fully covered. The program assumes all costs associated with the maintenance of the ABC house and its systems, including plumbing, electrical work, and appliances, at no expense to employees.
The Resident Academic Advisor is eligible for dinner on five evenings each week throughout the students' residency. These meals are provided by the program's cooks, who ensure that the pantry is well-supplied. Additionally, laundry facilities are accessible at the ABC house. A modest stipend is disbursed over the ten-month period commencing in September each year, with deductions for taxes, social security, and Medicare made before payment. It's important to note that no additional benefits are offered beyond these provisions.
Background check: The Resident Academic Advisor must be legally employable in Connecticut and must pass a background check for motor vehicle moving violations, criminal activity and sexual predation or harassment.
Dress, conduct, relationship status, and approach: The preferred attire for the ABC house is casual and appropriate. The Resident Academic Advisor is expected to set a positive example by approaching each student in a caring, respectful, and calm manner. It is essential to maintain a constructive and welcoming environment, with the regular practice of positive reinforcement for good behavior. When necessary, addressing negative behavior should be done judiciously and compassionately. Applications from couples in committed, durable relationships, engaged, or married are welcome.
Contract: The Resident Academic Advisor signs a contract each year at the discretion of the board of directors. While not a requirement, it is hoped that Resident Academic Advisor who perform well will remain with the program for at least 2-3 years.
Outside employment: The Resident Academic Advisor may have employment in addition to the resident tutor position so long as he/she is available for the resident tutor duties. Typically, this means that such outside employment can occur between 7:00 am and 5:30 pm each weekday. Some flexibility will be required.
General schedule: Students are in residence from the end of August to approximately the middle of June each year, excluding holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter break, and spring break. Their regular school hours are from 7:30 am to 2:10 pm, and they often participate in extracurricular activities until later in the evening. On weekends, students generally stay at the residence, except for one weekend per month when they spend Friday after school until dinner on Sunday with their host families.
