Vice President, Advancement
Job Description
SUMMARY
Responsible for the development and management of a comprehensive fund development and communication/marketing program for the agency, including the fundraising strategies of endowment, annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, special events and grantsmanship. Also responsible for marketing and directing community relations activities to increase awareness and utilization of Alive services, and to identify the need for new fundraising opportunities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works closely with the President/CEO to develop a vision and strategic direction for Alives advancement efforts and oversees all aspects of the Advancement department including leading, supervising, and mentoring Advancement staff and execution of fundraising programs to achieve Alives annual and long-term goals,
- Leads the fundraising, community relations and communications aspects of Alive; serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and ensures collaboration and communication across the Organization to support development and communication and marketing efforts,
- Works as a strategic partner with the President/CEO on overall goals as well as provides strategies, data and donor information to the President/CEO in preparation for donor meetings they make together,
- Ensures a comprehensive plan for fundraising and communications/marketing priorities is in place and reviewed at least quarterly; provides monthly report to the President/CEO,
- Supervises the Direct of Communications and the Development team,
- Establishes and executes strategic programs to grow the annual, major gift, event, corporate support, foundation, grants and planned giving support,
- Leads the major gift fundraising efforts across programs (e.g. major individual, corporate and foundation donors and prospects); maintains a portfolio of approximately 75 prospects,
- Leads capital or special initiative campaigns for the Organization and develops and communicates any donor naming opportunities with the team,
- Manages the relationship with the Development Committee of the Board and works closely with the Chair of the Committee, the Board Chair and President/CEO to build awareness and involvement of the Board and Advisory Council with Advancement activities; and ensures solicitation and stewardship of the Board and Advisory Council Members,
- Works with the communications and marketing team to ensure regular, tailored communications to expand Alives visibility, community engagement, and donor relations,
- Supervises grant research, proposal development, program compliance and reporting processes,
- Represents agency as appropriate and performs other duties as assigned by the President/CEO,
- Serves as member of the Senior Leadership team including budgeting, strategic planning and contracting,
- Collaborates with the President/CEO to establish and monitor effective public relations plans to increase visibility of the agency,
- Participates in community education programs and professional organizations,
- Maintains and develops knowledge of evolving hospice and palliative care philosophy and practices,
- Collaborates with the President/CEO and other Senior Leaders to continually improve the quality and cost effectiveness of care and to enhance the work lives of the employees,
- Recruits, hires, orients, guides, councils, supervises and evaluates team members focusing on mission, strategic plan and professional growth and development,
- Identifies and assesses community needs as they relate to the Alive Hospice philosophy and mission and ensures concomitant funding and communication methods, to address the respective need,
- Identifies strategic growth goals and develops plans and programs to enhance the community's awareness of Alive Hospice,
- Prepares and implements crisis communication plan when needed,
- Responsible for Alive Hospice brand management,
- Other duties may also be assigned.
OVERALL
- Work collaboratively as a part of the senior team for activities / issues that cross departmental supervisory lines,
- Complete annual training in a timely manner, no later than companywide deadlines,
- Ensure compliance with all business regulations for departments for whom direct supervision responsibilities are granted to include but not limited to:
- Human Resource standards of practice and compliance,
- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act for security and privacy of protected health information and other related provisions,
- Compliance with Stark and Anti-Kickback statutes including but not limited to referral relationships,
- CMS and The Joint Commission standards as applicable to departments supervised,
- All other business regulations that govern Alive Hospice practices,
- Provide input and/or direction to Human Resources policies and procedures and the performance appraisal and incentive programs to ensure that improper conduct is discouraged and that support of and conformity with the Compliance Program is part of any performance evaluation process for all employees,
- Monitors staff compliance with appropriate orientation, staff development, in service education and other educational plans,
- Participates through preparation, report writing, presentation and presence at Board and Board committee meetings at the request of the Board and/or the President/CEO,
- Maintains and develops knowledge of evolving hospice and palliative care philosophy and practices,
- Develops protocols and algorithms for process management in conjunction with other directors as needed,
- Other duties may also be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages a total of approximately 6 to 10 employees in the Advancement Department. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the team. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Significant experience (10 15+ years) in nonprofit fundraising with significant experience in major gift fundraising, planned giving and capital campaigns; as well as experience leading an organizations communication and marketing efforts,
- Demonstrated success in leading a team of professionals and volunteers to successful achievement of goals,
- Track record of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding $1 million plus gifts,
- Knowledge of and experience in all areas of advancement including annual giving, major gifts, events, foundation and corporate fundraising, planned giving, and communication and marketing strategies,
- Experience supervising and motivating development and marketing teams to reach organizational goals,
- Familiarity with the Middle Tennessee community and philanthropic partners,
- Bachelors degree in communications or related field, Masters degree preferred
